Background of the study

The study is based on design and implementation of a computerized goods haulage system. The study helps one to understand the origin of goods transportation and at the same time promote fast and more efficient service base on quick access to data and accurate information in the management of goods and its solutions. This research work is carried out to address the problems encountered by shipping companies and their customers

Abstract

This research work is carried out to address the problems encountered by shipping companies and their customers. The present system uses manual processes in handling and management of customer records and goods. This work is conducted towards the implementation of a computerized system for handling data processing of all bills of customers. It brings a first class solution to problems, hitherto encountered in the manual processing in the organization. The software is designed using visual basic 6.0 programming language. This language was chosen as a result of its easy syntax and structure for developing windows-based applications. With this application process time has reduced commensurately.

1.2       Statement of the problem

The management of goods transported by sea into Nigeria has over the years attracted poor patronage and the problems involve:

1. Manual storage of information such as files.
2. Difficulty in identifying customer’s goods and records

• How can goods transportation by sea be computerized?
• Would the computerization of haulage system promote speed and accurate retrieval of information when needed?

1.4       Objectives of the study

The objective of this study is to develop and implement a computerized Haulage system that will make provision of the following:

  Ensure fast and more efficient services to the customer based on quick access to data and accurate information.

• Providing up to date information relevant to the company and clients.
• To develop software that is user friendly and simpler in handling of bills and      updating of customers manifest.

1.5       Scope of the study

The existing system is done manually, it makes record keeping difficult this method has exhibited some loop holes and it is against this loop holes that this work was carried out, the study is also undertaken to produce a system which will address the loophole and co-operate need of the shipping company at the smallest possible cost and within the limit of technology available which was the driving force of this project.

 This study is restricted to the full operations of super maritime shipping company Lagos.

1.6       Significance of the study

With the computerization of a haulage system, the shipping company will be:

• Efficient and reliable, the establishment of the new system will create a faster means of transacting business between the shipping company and their customers.
• Processes like billing report generation and customer registration will be performed with speed.
• Customer information and goods will be stored in the system for easy retrieval.
