DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ONLINE CRIME REPORT SYSTEM

Online Crime Report System helps in getting the different police stations to share information and get in contact with one another, the aim of this project is to develop an online crime reporting and management system which is easily accessible to the public, the police department and the administrative department.

Abstract

Calabar-South Local Government has adopted various security policies to secure the lives and properties of its citizens, there is need to do more. Citizens have been faced with situations to lodge a complaint but because they are filled with false fears about the police department they do not lodge these complains. The Online Crime Report system which is the backbone of this research work is geared towards achieving an online crime reporting system which is very useful system to tackle the crime situation in Calabar-South LGA. In the same vein, the online crime report system helps in getting the different police stations to share information and get in contact with one another. For this research work, the Structured Systems Analysis and Design (SSADM) was used to achieve a competent implementation for the software’s development. In the same vein, PHP server-side programming language with MYSQL as the database was used for full enhancement and functionality to create unique design and user friendliness of the application. All these have been put together to create the Online Crime Report System that would be required to maintain records, reduce greatly the paperwork put into manual crime reports system and bridge the gap between the public and the police department as it helps the police department in preventing criminal activities.

1.2    Statement of the problem

The inability for people in Calabar-South to report crime to the Police because they are faced with false fear constitutes a major problem for the Police to perform their duties effectively and efficiently.

Based on the issues described above the following research questions can be generated.

1. What are the factors responsible for the false fear and distrust in the Police department?
2. What have been done in the past to improve the situation?
3. How can we contribute towards improving the standard?

1.4     Objective of the study

The objectives of this research work are as follows:

1. To review what has been done so far relating to this research work.
2. To develop software that will receive and store crime reports.
3. To make the crime records available online to facilitate distribution to different police stations.

1.5     Scope of the study

This study is a research geared towards correcting the factors affecting the crime reporting, investigation and correction role of the Nigeria police. In view of the scope, an online crime reporting application will be implemented.

1.6     Significance of study

1.) This project will help reduce the false fear and distrust in the Police department and their response to crime situations.

2.) This project will help take away bias attitude of people concerning the approach to crime reporting via any other means than going to the police station.

3.) It will also make it easy to use tool that would give access for update since it will be built using Active server pages.
