AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INTRA-CITY TRANSPORT INFORMATION SYSTEM
TOPIC: DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INTRA-CITY TRANSPORT INFORMATION SYSTEM
This

major cities of Abuja, Calabar, Lagos particularly in new member countries, in
the sphere of intensity of urban traffic becomes heavier every year because of the
increasing number of vehicles in city streets, while maintaining an
outdated infrastructure and archaic system of traffic management.
Abstract
This
study presents an urban intra-city transport information system. Here, drivers
hire and operate vehicles on a fixed rate and time period. Transportation
demands in urban areas continue to increase rapidly as a result of both
population growth and changes in travel patterns. In the era of environment
concerned and limited space available in cities, transport planners have to
provide a system, which can ensure safe and clean mobility to all city
residents. This requires planning a system, which is affordable, reliable and
efficient for the users’ as well as operator’s perspectives. A road based taxi
system offers an opportunity for creating a system capable of meeting multiple
needs of users and operators. This methodology offer incremental improvement in
intra city transport system to meet the capacity requirements of different size
cities. It is imperative that intra city transport systems are planned such
that they satisfy the requirements of commuters, users, as well as service
providers within the limited resource constraints. A flexible, comfortable,
easily available and reliable transport service is expected to shift people
from private vehicles to public transports. This work presents the strategies
which can be employed to satisfy public transport demands of different city
shape.

Statement of the Problem
Computer
technology has actually changed the entire transportation system; the
intra-city transport system is not exclusive. Presently, the operators of intra
city transport system do not use computers in their operation. Taxi owners
employ the services of single driver to each taxi, thereby facing several
complains and problems from these drivers for not meeting up their daily
returns; these include:
1.
Breakdown of vehicle during operation
2.
Apprehension by traffic operators such as Federal Safety Corps (FRSC),Vehicle
Inspection Officer(VIO),Traffic Warden and Department of Public Transport
(DOPT),Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency(CTRA).
3.
Unavailability of Passengers and many other excuses.
4.
The owner has no information about the taxi in operation these problems hinders
and does not promote investors interest in the taxi operation, the operation
mode is DE tolerating instead increasing.

Objective of Study
The
major objective of this study is to design and develop an intra-city (Taxi) transport
system that will enhance the following:
- Keep database of the
vehicles and label them accordingly.
- Provide booking and
payment by any interested registered driver and vehicle owner before
collection for operation.
- Keep record of registered
drivers and their operations.
- Provide timing slip for
booked drivers and information channel for control of the operations.
- Check the operation of the
vehicle within the metropolis.
1.4
Significance of Study
This
research work serves as a base for future studies and will be a source of
information and guide to all future researchers that may embark on this similar
work. The record of this work will aid an organization enhance team work, in
collaboration with knowledge sharing among the employers and employees through
an integrated surface. It will significantly reduce the amount of irrelevance
excuses etc.
- It will increase
effectiveness and productivity through an open surface, the system will
provide for rapid information sharing, reporting feedback of each user.
- Ensuring that there a
smooth workflow through enhance information supplied the transporters and
passengers.
