3.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE BUSINESS INDUSTRY/ INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

The poultry industry in Nigeria has experienced continuous production and expansion in recent years giving the sudden increase in demand for day old chicks, mature chicken. In the past chicken were kept in the backyard for domestic use, now it has become one of the most demanded sources of food, the sudden increase is trace to high demand for chicken and egg product by hotel, fast food and individuals.

Poultry farming or poultry production is the practice of raising domesticated birds such as chickens, turkeys, duck and geese as a sub-category of animal husbandry, for the purpose of producing meat and/or eggs for food. Chickens of all the domesticated birds are produced largely for its economic value.

The poultry industry has become very lucrative due to high demand for chicken meat in the market. Production has never met up to demand, so that makes it very interesting and profitable. also government policies to boost agriculture have been a factor to the boom in this sector especially with the ban on the importation of frozen chicken.

Chickens are raised all year round as a source of food, for both their meat and egg.

Nigeria has the highest number of poultry farm in African. Poultry meat and egg are the most consumed animal protein; unrestricted by any religion or culture in Nigeria. It is recorded that the poultry industry contributes about 25% of the country’s Agriculture GDP. Poultry farmers in Nigeria form 25 per cent of the country’s agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to him, the association and its members constitute 25 per cent of the agricultural GDP of this country. Nigeria presently produces about 300,000 tons of poultry meat per annum officially and 650,000 tons of egg according to FAQ, A parallel records from poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), indicates that Nigeria that produces presently above 1.25million tons of egg per year.

The livestock segment of the agricultural sector of the economy is very lucrative. This is because of the ever-growing population of the country. Besides, the government ban on the importation of aquaculture and poultry produce is a great opportunity in the sector.

The major players in the livestock industry of the nation’s economy are the Obasanjo Farms Nigerian Limited, Zartech Farms, Agritech farms, Dukes Farms, Farmers giant Nigerian Limited etc.

The potentials for growth in the livestock markets are the; high population density in the country, government bans on importation of poultry and aquaculture produce and the current government moves to diversify the nation’s economy to nature resources sectors and agriculture as major concerns.

This is the major opportunity YOUR BUSINESS NAME has identified in the industry and capitalizes on to make the products available and affordable for our customer. Also to increase our production capacity to meet the increasing demands of our customer.
