Abstract
Car Rental System (CRS) is a web based
system for a company that rents out cars. Car Rental System enables the company
to make their services available to the public through the internet and also
keep records about their services. The research aims to build an online car
rental system. The researcher used five stages development life cycle including
planning, analysis, design, implementation and use, which utilized programming
language of PHP 5.0 and version 5.1.30 MYSQL database.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Car Rental System is a web based
system for a company that rents out cars. This system enables the company to
make their services available to the public through the internet and also keep
records about their services.
The world has become a place where there is a
lot of technological development; where every single thing done physically has
been transformed into computerized form. Nowadays, people’s activities have been
transformed into work done by computerized systems. One of which is the main
target of this project which is about Car Rental System. The system of renting
cars exist back in the previous years, were people rent cars for their personal
reasons. Car renting is essential to many peoples’ plan to travel or move from
one place to another for business purposes, tour, and visit or holidays, for
these reasons Car renting is very helpful.
The [8] starting point of Car renting
is really unknown as said by Thomas Pretty; he also mentioned that many beliefs
that Joe Saunders was the first man to start a Car renting company. According
to Thomas Pretty, charges were calculated with the help of mileage tracking
device. Many people became interested in the Car rental business and hence got
involved. Car renting became more popular as years pass by. Today Car renting
services is found all over the world, especially in the developed and
developing countries. To make this service more popular and accessible to the
public it has been transform into a web base system and connected to the
internet were everyone can be able to have access to it.
The information system designed to
more closely manager’s needs and the system set up as major computer
application area. The Management Information System (MIS) as a computer-based
system makes information available to users with similar needs. Manager used
the output information. The earlier studies shown that MIS could used to manage
car rental, expected to accelerate as well as archiving services to customers
better and safer, making it easier when required at any time. The online
implementation of management information system provided and supported the
customers for reservations, assist management in knowing rental car inventory
at a specified time, to process transactions between branches car rental,
transportation transaction processing, which supports satisfactory service to
customers and support the company’s operational processes. Web-based car rental
information system increases the customers, and help promotion ( Bayu, 2011).
A car rental or car hire agency is a
company that rents automobiles for short period of time for a fee whether in a
few hours or a few days or week. It is an elaborate form of a rental shop,
often organized with numerous local branches (which allow a user to return a
vehicle to a different location), and primarily ‘located near airports or busy
city areas and often complemented by a website allowing online reservations.
Car rental agencies primarily serve
people who have a car that is temporarily out of reach or out of service, for
example travelers who are out of town or owners of damaged or destroyed
vehicles who are awaiting repair or insurance compensation.
Because of the variety of sizes of
their vehicles, car rental agencies may also serve the self-moving industry
needs, by renting vans or trucks, and in certain markets other types of
vehicles such as motorcycles or scooters may also be offered (Mohd, 2012).
Car rental companies operate by purchasing
or leasing a number of fleet vehicles and renting them to their
customers for a fee. Rental fleets can be structured in several ways – they can
be owned outright (these are known as ‘risk vehicles’ because the car rental
operator is taking a risk on how much the vehicle will be sold for when it is
removed from service), they can be leased, or they can be owned under a
guaranteed buy-back program arranged directly through a manufacturer or
manufacturer’s financial arm (Walter, 2012).
1.2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
In an organization running a car
rental service, the Process on searching the client details is slow if the
company is using manual system and there are thousands of clients. Besides
that, staffs have to record the booking manually and it is difficult to produce
a monthly report or an annual report. Manual system does not allow client to
booking online and hard to keep track on the record of rental cars.
1.3 AIM AND
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The aim and objectives of this study
is to design and implement of a car rental system for Airports that will;

a simple and secure system that protects client’s information and
confidential information of the organization.
- Design
a user friendly system that enables client check for availability of vehicle
and book or reserve a vehicle online.
- Design
a system that enables clients pay their car rent online.
