SCHOOL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
Information Technology advancement in the educational sector has taken a positive leap in recent times, yet little or more of this development is experienced in countries like ours. The aim of this work is to ensure we meet up with standards and advancements experienced in other countries.  This work deals with student details, academic related reports, personal details, course details, timetable, medical details and other resource related details too. It tracks the details of a student from the day one to the end of his school year which can be used for all reporting purpose, tracking of attendance, progress in the class, completed school years, exam details, exam result; and all these will be available for future references too. This program will have the databases of subjects offered by the student; teacher’s details would also be taken custody of. This program can facilitate us explore all the activities happening in the life of the student.  With this program, we can also get to know which teacher is assigned to a class. The use of this program would by far reduce loss of data through the use of manual storage of document and paper work. 
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Today, which we call information age as many technologic developments have been experienced; the biggest risk that an organization could take is to stay insensitive to change. Many significant factors such as continuous developments in information technologies, information exchange, increasing expectations of the society, modern managing perceptions and applications cause organizations all over the world to develop new applications in order to survive. Because of their priority in modern societies, Information Technologies have reached a state of high priority in education, too. Recently, contributions of information technologies to education have been among the mostly emphasized subjects. Every country aims to provide their citizens with the most contemporary education in line with their financial efficiency. For this reason, big investment plans about the use of information systems have been put into action all over the world, including our country Nigeria, in order to support the s Program. In the first section of the program, at least two primary schools in the countries were equipped in terms of information technologies and then activated. In-service training courses about the use of computer in primary education which was given to coordinators of information technology sections. In the second section of the project, it is expected that information technology software are distributed to schools around Nigeria and education portal is established. By training computer teachers, in-service training is planned for all the school inspectors working on the field, and educators formed of managers and teachers of primary schools and high schools which have or will have information technology classes, on use of information technologies in education and use of educational software, which will be prepared in line with recent instruction programs.
Nowadays the database is the only professional structure for storing and elaborating complex information and huge amount of data. The database structure brings about several advantages, like: quick and real time access, high security, standards establishment, automated reports and statistics etc. It is the most popular format that businesses, banks, government, universities, schools and many other institutions all over the world are using for storing data and information concerning their activities. Many schools in the world have already installed their information management system and are efficiently using advantages of Information Technology. A School Management System is a large database system which can be used for managing your school's day to day business. SMS is configurable and can be configured to meet most individual school's needs. It is a multi-user system and can be used by hundreds or even thousands users at same time. General speaking, it is platform running on a Local Area Network (LAN). This paper deals with the development of such system for Nigerian high schools.
1.1       STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
In Nigeria, there have been several change of government, with all clamoring for a vision of a world class education for all and an improved educational system in the country but they have actually failed to acknowledge the role information technology has to play in the realization of this dream.  In the current educational setting, the problems faced are
i.  Time consumption due to manual system
ii.  It is error prone
iii.  Loss of data due to much paper work
iv. Maintenance of Applications & their storage is extremely tedious
v. Updating information is a herculean task
1.2       OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
The objective of the study is to develop an information system to automatically manage the activities of students in a school, hasten all processes carried out in the school effectively and keep up to date record for easy accessibility. In summary, the main objective of this project is to computerize the manual system & reduce the time consumption. In other words we can say that this project has the following objectives:-
• Computerize system
• Reduce time consumption
• Reduce error scope
• Centralized database management
1.3       SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
School management information system is a computerized system that would manage students information and other related information in a school.
