DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A WEB-BASED STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A WEB-BASED STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (A CASE STUDY OF COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT)
ABSTRACT
Student Information System deals with all kind of student details, academic related reports and college details. It tracks all the details of a student from the day one to the end of his course, which can be used for all forms of reporting; progress in the course, completed semesters or years, curriculum details, exam details, final exam result; and all these will be available for future references too. Our program will have the databases of courses offered by the institution under all levels of graduation or main streams, lecturer or staff details, students' details in all aspects. The system will have an administrator that will administer the online student information system. The administrator should have the ability to perform various operations like creating a workspace for the new students and making various queries in the system.  The user should be able to access his/her account from anywhere just by inputting the correct username and password.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Student information system is a software application for education establishments to manage student data. Student information systems provide capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores through an electronic grade book, building student schedules, tracking student attendance, and managing many other student-related data needs in a school, college or university. Also known as student information management system (SIMS), student records system (SRS), student management system (SMS), campus management system (CMS) or school management system (SMS).
The student information system is equivalent to an Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP system for a corporate customer. As such, many of the issues with ERP System Selection Methodology, implementation, and operation of an ERP system apply to schools and their student information systems. These systems vary in size, scope and capability, from packages that are implemented in relatively small organizations to cover student records alone, to enterprise-wide solutions that aim to cover most aspects of running large multi-campus organizations with significant local responsibility. Many systems can be scaled to different levels of functionality by purchasing add-on "modules" and can typically be configured by their home institutions to meet local needs. Notably, student information system incurs such application software designed for educational establishments to manage student data. Student information systems provide capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores, building student schedules, tracking student attendance as well as managing many other student-related data needs within the institution university.
Moreover, universities have created their own bespoke student record systems, but with growing complexity in the business of educational establishments, organizations now choose to buy customizable, within-the-shelf-software. The modern student information systems are usually server-based, with the application residing on central computer server and are being accessed by client applications at various places within and even outside the school. Since the year 1990s, student information systems have been changing, and are fast adopted through the presence of a web medium as a channel for accessing student details and information.
1.1          STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The statement of the problem includes: inefficient handling of inquiries from prospective students, inefficient handling of the admissions process, inefficient records of examinations, inefficient communications between staffs and students, inefficient discipline records, and inadequate provision of statistical reports.
1.2          OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The objective of this project is to design and implement a web based student information system that will manage student records.
1.3          SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This significance of this project is the benefit it will render to stake-holders in schools, and those working in student-related environments.
