DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WEB-BASED
PARCEL DELIVERY SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
This research project emphasizes on
the need to automate the crude, obsolete and manual methods used by our courier
companies in the distribution network or supply chain. Parcel are
valuables whether raw or refined, so;
they is every need for senders who I refer to in this work as customer or
clients to check and know the location or progress/status of their goods
independent of location along the distribution network. The activities of
individuals, corporate bodies and government both locally (internally/intra)
and externally (extra) requires the movement of valuables from one location to
the other, meaning this valuables will at times change hands severally between
individuals or companies of interest bringing about so much hurdle in
documentation and monitoring process. At the end of this, one should be able to
see the need for the automation of an online parcel delivery system in Nigeria,
in which way it has improve the trust and security in the distribution
network/supply chain and see how successful it can be implemented.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Almost all corporate body requires
goods to be moved or distributed from one location to another, be it raw
materials or manufactured goods. Also in day to day activities there arises the
need to move assets from one location to another by air, land or sea. The
destination for these goods ranges from states, countries and continents and
may take hours, days, weeks or even months to reach. This observable fact
brought about the need for owners to monitor the progress of their goods along
the distribution network. Tracking which means; “to follow the progress or
development of something…” (The oxford Advance Learner’s dictionary, the 6th
edition) can stand as a definition for the need explained in the previous
paragraph. For the course of this study we shall further define tracking as;
“the process of gathering and presenting information on the location of
delivery items in a distribution network or supply chain” (Deschner et al.,
1998). Besides its role in providing information on shipment status, tracking can
also have an impact on supply chain management as it provides the possibility
of creating visibility or transparency to the material flowing in the supply
chain. A comprehensive tracking system would enable a company to monitor the
arrival critical components and plan its operation based on the estimated
arrival of these components (Biddle, 2004). Today, most logistics service
providing company see tracking as an important tool for improving customer
service and it is now a known standard in most of these companies, there is no
denying the fact that tracking has come to stay and will continue to play its
role in proper and transparent service delivery.
