CHAPTER ONE
1.0                          INTRODUCTION
1.1  BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Reading is an essential part of individual learning, growth and development. The ideal reading streams from the need to sustain and preserve knowledge for the next generation. Just as Harry S. Truman said, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers” one would say, Reading inspires leading, cause in every book lies knowledge, skill, wisdom and the ability to stand out having gained one thing or more than you did before. In Africa, Nigeria to be precise, history has it that oral mode of communication was the method used in the transfer of information/knowledge, it was seen as a method used in bonding and sustaining the tradition/customs of any given tribe. This mode had its obvious limitations, as it could inspire a misinterpretation, a change in the content of the information, and without appropriate mode of preservation, such information can easily be lost. Hence, the need for a better means of preserving and passing on information was needful. The British colonization of Nigeria brought about the introduction of books and reading which enabled and increased knowledge and exposure to things unseen. The reading habit grew to the level of producing Nigerian Scholars who became literary icons, nationally and internationally. Such scholars include, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, John P. Clark e.t.c. It is however unfortunate to note the dwindling state of the reading habit, a dwindling that does not only affect Nigerians, but also goes beyond the African borders as well.
Similarly reading is a receptive skill like listening and vocalizing what was stimulated, it also productive when it is done aloud. However, it is a mental process involving the interpretation of signs perceived through the sense organs. According to Longe and Ojo (2000) reading is the ability to transform the visual representation of language into meaning. According to Walker (2005) reading is an active process (not a product like history) in which readers shift between sources of information (what they know and what the text says) elaborate meaning and strategies, check their interpretation (receiving when appropriate and use social context to focus their responses).
The Interpretation Reading Association (2008) says reading is a complete system of deriving meaning from print that requires all the following:
1.          The development and maintenance of a motivation to read.
2.          The development of appropriate active strategies to contrast meaning from prints
3.          Sufficient background information and vocabulary to foster reading comprehension.
4.          The ability to decode unfamiliar words
5.          The ability to read fluently.
From this definition of reading, we can deduce the reading is a complex activity that requires good mastery and personal interest for sound effectiveness, consequently most students lost interest and concentration thereby leading to poor reading habits among students.
