Design and Implementation of Automated System for Diagnosis of Malaria

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AUTOMATED SYSTEM FOR DIAGNOSIS OF MALARIA
Abstract
The main objective of this work is to develop an expert system for diagnosis of malaria; Malaria is one of the major diseases causing death even more rapidly than AIDS and therefore the urgent need for the case management of malaria diagnosis and treatment through automated system. Malaria remains a major public health problem in Nigeria, children under age five pregnant women are mostly affected. More than sixty percent of patients’ visits to the hospital in Nigeria are due to malaria.
The inaccessibility of experts (doctor) and the technical capability to perform a correct diagnosis and treatment of malaria infection is of outmost importance in several settings, not only in endemic countries, for clinical, epidemiological and research purposes but also in non-endemic countries.  The correct and timely diagnosis of malaria infection in an ill patient is in fact of critical importance since symptoms of complicated malaria may suddenly develop, possibly leading to death despite intensive care efforts. We develop this work using Microsoft visual studio enterprise (C#).
1.1       Statement of the Problem
Doctor should be accessible in all health centres at all time but most times doctors (experts) are not available to render services to patients in health centres.
In view of the forgoing, it would be of great necessity to provide an expert system that will provide a complementary medical service, such as medical disease diagnosis in health centres where qualified experts are lacking. Hence this topic; expert system for the diagnosis of malaria and therapy is required
1.2 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this work is to develop an expert system for diagnosis of malaria, which is a non-communicable diseases and provision of therapy, and also to manage patient records and patient medical history properly.
1.3        Scope of the Study
This project is limited to health centres only. This project cannot cure malaria or Eradicate malaria but can only diagnose malaria and prescribe drugs for treatment.
1.4       Limitations of the Study
A limited time constraint has been a major problem in carrying out this research. Finance has been a major challenge in carrying out this research.
1.5 Significance of the Study
  1. It will help to retain the skill of an expert medical doctor in case of any eventuality;
  2. It can support academic development;
  3. It can be useful in many hospitals, both private and government, cases where the expert is not on seat;
  4. It can also be used in the laboratory for quick research work.
