AN ANALYSIS OF VARIANT AND DEVIANT NIGERIAN ENGLISH EXPRESSIONS IN THE WRITTEN COMPOSITION OF UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATES

Well Researched and Ready to use Ph.D Thesis, page numbers: 160, Department: Arts and Social Sciences Education

ABSTRACT
This study investigated the variant and deviant Nigerian English expressions in the written composition of University Undergraduates. The relative proportion of variant and deviant forms and the influences of the variables of gender, ethnicity, course of study, (faculty) 0’level English grade and personal multilingualism on the respondents’ use of variant and deviant forms were specifically investigated. The population for the study was drawn from three Federal Universities in the three major linguistic zones of Nigeria viz; Ahmadu Bello from the North, University of Ibadan from the West and University of Nigeria, Nsukka from the East. The target population was 300 level students from the faculties of Arts, Sciences and Education, from which 600 (200 per institution) were randomly selected. A researcher-designed instrument, which comprised a section on bio-data, and another on a structured 200 – 300 word essay test was used after being validated by experts. An intra-rater reliability assessment of a two-week interval was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. For Variant Forms, (VF) r was 0.87, while for Deviant Forms, (DF) r was 0.88. The percentage was used to analyse data on Research Question 3, while the Chi-square (χ 2 ) was used to test the five (5) hypotheses postulated, at 0.05 confidence level. The findings indicated the dominance of deviant forms in the written English of the respondents. The study specifically showed that the variables of gender, ethnicity, and 0’level English grade had significant influences on respondents’ use of variant and deviant Nigerian English expressions, while those of course of study (faculty) and personal multilingualism had none. On the basis of the findings, recommendations were made to relevant interest groups and stakeholders especially on the codification of variant forms, the remediation of deviant forms, and the need to provide appropriate language improvement strategies to enhance the proficiency of the respondents, especially in the area of the English vocabulary and expressions.
