DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION
OF ATM SOFTWARE FOR MAJOR NIGERIAN LANGUAGES
Introduction
To design and implement multi-lingual Bank Automated Teller
machine software for the three major languages in Nigeria, despite the unquestionable
benefits of technology in the world today, we cannot overlook the obvious
accompanying disadvantage – one of which is the imposition of a dominant
culture (language). This cannot go on unnoticed, not in a continent like
Africa, a continent where most of its nations are still in the classification
of the third world.
1.2. Statement of the Problem
The seeming disadvantage of technology: imposing of
culture/language on users
- The fact that in the third-world
nations e.g. Nigeria, about 55% of the populace live in rural areas, with
an estimate of 35% of this group, illiterate. This is a hindering
factor to the implementation and effective communication of the benefits
of the technology-based solutions. A typical example: the Bank Automated
Teller Machine.

Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study include:
- To exploit the development of
localized software using the Unicode encoding system.
- To
design and implement multi-lingual Bank Automated Teller machine software
that:
- Enables
local/rural dwellers and the illiterate to have access to cutting-edge
banking services.
- Increase
the Bank customer- base by endearing them to the inhabitants of the rural
areas of the country.
- Can
serve as a prototype for other localized bank ATMs in other countries.
- To
explore the feasibility of developing localized ATMs to service rural
citizens.
1.5 Scope of the Study
This project exploits the possibility of
applying the Unicode encoding system in developing a bank ATM machine localized
to include the three major Nigerian languages: Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.
