Diet for Weight Reduction

Despite concerted efforts by medical experts and stakeholders to provide the needed formula for the management and treatment of obesity in Nigeria, the prevalence level has continued to soar with statistics suggesting that between 35 per cent and 64 per cent of Nigerians are either overweight or obese.

Recently, stakeholders in the health sector raised the alarm that more Nigerians were becoming obese as against what it used to be. Indeed, more Nigerians are now known to be overweight.

The prevalence of this health condition in the country has thus become a source of worry for experts and the citizens, especially because it has been known to trigger several other health complications, including diabetes, various heart diseases, among others.
But the uncertainty about whether the right formula for overweight management and treatment is being applied to help reduce the problem in the country might just have come to rest with the introduction of the Cambridge Weight Plan (CWP) in the country.

CWP, a well researched weight management product is not one obesity management plan many Nigerians have been used to, despite the fact it has achieved successes in this regard since 1984 in some developed countries, including the United Kingdom. However, the plan has continued to gain acceptance since it was launched in Nigeria by Mrs Eniola Karunwi, a beneficiary of the product back in the UK many years ago.

Karunwi, who prior to using the CWP battled with obesity for almost 10 years until she discovered the treatment plan which made her lose over 50 kg in a space of six months, has been carrying out the campaign in Nigeria with strong messages.

Like the story in the bible of Jesus in Decapolis, where the people could not hold back the good they have received from him, Karunwi pledged to tell the story of CWP to the world, starting from her country, Nigeria, where a lot of people have died through complications occasioned by obesity.

Desired to achieving this, she gave up her job in the UK and moved to Nigeria for the purpose of offering solution to several Nigerians battling with overweight and obesity, especially for those who have tried several weight plans without making progress.

Since she launched the Cambridge Weight Plan Nigerian, five years ago, over 6,000 Nigerians have benefited from numerous weight loss and lifestyle changes, while a number of people have been trained to become Cambridge Weight Plan ambassadors.

According to her, CWP Nigeria was only available through trained Cambridge Consultants, who have all successfully completed CWP programmes. “The consultants supply the products as well as support, motivate, encourage and advise clients throughout the process.  Once a client’s weight goal has been reached, the consultant assists clients with long term weight maintenance.

“Being obese can take up to nine years off of a person’s lifespan and increase the chances of developing a range of health related problems. Obesity is a growing problem in Nigeria and CWP provides an affordable solution for people who want to become healthier and live longer,” said Karunwi.

According to experts, obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat is accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer and osteoarthritis.

Experts also believe obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive energy intake, lack of physical activity and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness.

Research shows that an effective way to tackle weight gain or obesity is to understand that weight gain is a product of the imbalance between caloric input and caloric output, hence the need to tailor treatment and management towards maintaining the caloric balance of the physiologic human.

But how does this CWP works? Why should more Nigerians embrace it? Karunwi, said the CWP is a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) with an effective way to lose weight fast, adding that it was designed to give the mental encouragement and meet the person’s ideal weight because the results were almost immediate.

She further stated that for overweight or obese people, a VLCD was a great way to see quick results at the beginning of a weight loss journey since it does not wait for several months or years before the results begin to manifest.

According to the National Health Scheme, achieving a healthy weight means striking the right balance between the calorie been put in the body and the calorie being used up. Hence, the science in loosing body weight involves taking in fewer calories and utilising more of it either through dieting, exercise or other lifestyle changes.

The scheme also explained that a VLCD contains fewer calories of about 800 per day which would represent the daily intake, while an average man uses up about 2500 calorie daily and an average woman 2000 calorie, while adding that the imbalance between the caloric output and the caloric input helps in maintaining stability for overweight or obese persons.

With this formula, CWP is niching it in the bud by providing a diet that contains all diet essentials with low caloric contents while also maintaining a balanced diet for the overweight or obese person.

Explaining further, Karunwi said the VLCD speeds up metabolism, irrespective of body weight and can lead to changes in body metabolism and chemistry that have been linked to a better health and longer life.
The active and obvious results of weight loss experienced during the usage of the VLCD, according to Karunwi, gives motivation for individuals to stay on the path of healthy lifestyle.

“The VLCD reduces blood sugar, insulin levels and blood pressure, just as it leads to reduced risk of many common diseases amongst Nigerians such as diabetes and high blood pressure. This weight plan also slows down aging, as the calorie diets have the potential to add years on a person’s life.”

She said the diet was made up of shakes, bars, soups and porridge.

“And the products can be used on their own for quick weight loss or they can be used in tandem with normal meals for a more gradual weight loss. The aim is to create a formula food with excellent weight loss properties with no undesirable side effects. CWP contains the right level of protein to protect lean tissue; the right level of carbohydrate to promote a mild ketosis and eliminate hunger, and the right level of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids to maintain good health,” she added.

So far, CWD Nigeria currently has 32 Cambridge consultants in states across Nigeria including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Jos, Abia, Enugu, Calabar, Owerri, Kwara, Ibadan, Akure, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Niger, Ogun, Bayelsa and Port Harcourt.
